Object Name Ceremonial bell (copper alloy)
Description These bells, like virtually all yellow castings, were made almost exclusively for the king. They served two different purposes: On ancestral altars, they were rung at the beginning of a ceremony. And as rank signs and amulets, they were worn by high-ranking soldiers. In the region of southern Nigeria, they were made since the 9th century and exported to England in the 16th century. Test: Dietmar Neitzke.

Collector Eugen Rautenstrauch junior or (more probably) Theodor Rautenstrauch bought it in London and then Eugen Rautenstrauch senior (Cologne, Germany) donated it to the Linden-Museum
Acquisition date 1899
Circumstances of acquisition Theodor Rautenstrauch bought several Benin objects during a stay in London. Among them were two very similar bells. His father Eugen Rautenstrauch then donated one of them to the Linden-Museum. The other one he wanted to give to the Cologne Museum. Text: Markus Himmelsbach.
